Kɔkɔɔ Series 2024

Kɔkɔɔ, the Twi word for red, is both a colour and a signal. This series began during my time in Ghana, where I made portraits of people I met through quiet conversations and everyday moments that stayed with me. These paintings are not direct records. They are responses. Each one carries the emotional weight I felt in those exchanges and reflects a broader sense of what circulates within the diaspora.

Red holds weight. It speaks to bloodlines, urgency, pressure, and memory. It is both personal and political. In this work, red becomes a way to bring forward what often remains buried. Not through spectacle, but through stillness. The figures are present but not explained. They hold complexity without needing to perform it.

This series asks how much of what we carry is truly ours and how much has been passed down without words but still deeply felt.
